about

Jänisjärvi is a lake in the Republic of Karelia, Russia, located north of and draining to Lake Ladoga.
The basin of this somewhat circular lake was formed by meteorite impact 700±5 million years ago during the Cryogenian period. The crater is 14 kilometers in diameter.
Prior to World War II, the lake was thought to be the second known volcanic caldera in Finland (the other was Lake Lappajärvi). Both were eventually recognized as impact craters.

Jänisjoki is a river of Finland and Russia. It begins from the territory of Finland in the province of Northern Karelia, passes into the Republic of Karelia in Russia and flows there into Lake Ladoga. It is 70 kilometres long, and has a drainage basin of 3,900 square kilometres. It is part of the Neva River basin in Finland and Russia that flows into the Gulf of Finland in St. Petersburg, Russia.
